I wanted to say Happy Birthday to New York City when publishing this gamebook in 2024. It has turned 400 years old in silence, yet not forgotten by those who appreciate its history and its people. Happy Birthday, NYC!

Demons & Detectives! Forbidden Rituals is a gamebook using the Roaring Twenties time era. You will need a 6-sided die or generator to play the game.

The story so far….

You find the journal to your partner in crime who died two weeks ago in Queens during a raid. You shake your head at the loss while sipping on your whiskey in your car across from your office.

 The Journal - Detective Jack O’Malley’s Log, 1924

The city that never sleeps, huh? Well, it ain’t just the humans who keep it awake. There’s a whole other world out there, hidden in the shadows of these skyscrapers. And lately, things have been gettin’ downright peculiar. It all started with a dame. Ain’t it always? She walked into my office, all legs and desperation. Said her husband vanished without a trace. No note, nothin’. Just poof, like a magician’s rabbit. But this wasn’t no ordinary rabbit hole. This was 1920s New York, and strange happenings were as common as a hot dog cart on every corner. I followed the trail, from speakeasies to back alleys, and it led me to a seedy joint called “The Starlight Club.” The air hung heavy with smoke, and the jazz band played like they were summoning demons. And maybe they were.

See, rumor had it that the joint’s owner, Madame Zara, dabbled in more than just bootleg gin. She had a knack for the mystical, the otherworldly. Some said she’d even made a deal with the devil himself. But I wasn’t buyin’ it. Not until I saw it with my own two eyes.

Late one night, I caught her in the act. She stood at the center of a pentagram, chanting in a language I couldn’t understand. The room crackled with energy, and that’s when I saw 'em: aliens. Little gray bastards, skulking in the shadows. They weren’t here for the jazz, that’s for damn sure.

Now, I ain’t no believer in little green men, but there they were. And they weren’t alone. The dame’s husband was there too, eyes glazed over, like he’d been hypnotized. I drew my piece, but before I could make a move, the aliens vanished. Poof, just like the husband.

 So here I am, caught in a web of black magic, aliens, and dames with secrets. The city’s heartbeat is off-kilter, and it’s up to me to set things right. But I ain’t no hero. I’m just a detective, tryin’ to make sense of a world gone mad. Yeah, New York’s got its share of strange happenings, alright. And I got a feelin’ it’s gonna get a whole lot stranger before this case is closed.

Warning: Listen up, pal. This ain’t no book for the faint of heart. It gots some vibe to it, some nitty gritty. Heck, it has everything you don’t want in it.
